Board of Directors

David Thorpe, Chairman of the Board

Until June 2003 David was President of Europe for (Electronic Data Systems). In his role he was responsible for European operations within 20 countries and revenue of $4bn. Prior to this he was Corporate Vice President, Operations based in Dallas, Texas and London

David joined in 1994 as Managing Director of the UK Public Sector Division, where he presided over a period of outstanding growth and was appointed Chief Executive of UK in 1995.

Before joining, David was at Bull Information Systems, where he was a member of the UK board and Managing Director of Bull’s largest operating unit, Systems Integration and Services.

Before entering the corporate world, David spent 17 years in Government finance and information technology positions. He held a number of positions in financial and general management, accounting and auditing that culminated in a position as Head of Computing and Management Services for a major London borough.

Since leaving a full-time executive role he has built a portfolio of business interests. From 2004 to 2009 he was Chairman of the Racecourse Association Ltd. and a member of the British Horseracing Authority and the Horse Race Betting and Levy Board. David played a leading role in the modernisation of British Horse Racing.

He has been a Non-Executive Director on the Boards of Staffware plc, Anite plc, Isoft plc, VT Group and Morgan Chambers plc. He is an advisor to a number of technology and business process companies. From 1st June, 2003 he took on the Chief Executive Officer role for Anite Group plc on an interim basis for six months. He was appointed Non Executive Chairman of Tunstall Ltd. in May 2004 and took it through a sale by HG Capital to Bridgepoint. He remained Non Executive Chairman for Bridgepoint and took it through the sale to Charterhouse in April 2008. He, until recently, was Non Executive Chairman of Services Ltd. for Bridgepoint and Balderton Capital, the leading global provider of clinical and triage software solutions; Non-Executive Chairman of SHL Group Ltd. for HG Capital and Non Executive Chairman of Arena Leisure plc.

He is currently Non-Executive Chairman of Innovation Group, Nair & Co, Teufel Gmbh, and a non-executive director of Interserve Plc and Lumesse plc.

David has been a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accounting since 1971. He is a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists. He was elected County Councillor to Gloucestershire County Council in 2009 to 2013.

David Thorpe lives in the Cotswolds and Devon with his wife Sheila. He has two daughters, Andrea and Karen and four grandchildren. His interests include the countryside, food and wine and equestrian activities, which include Bobble Barn Stud a small stud farm breeding racehorses for National Hunt and the Flat. He is a NH race horse owner.

Matthew Rourke, Board Member

Matthew is head of the Services team.

Matthew joined HgCapital in 2009 having previously been a partner at Deloitte. After gaining his ACA qualification at Deloitte, he spent 14 years advising private equity firms transacting in Europe and Asia. Matthew is a director on the boards of JLA, Parts Alliance and Nair & Co. He was previously a director on the boards of SHL which was sold in July 2012 and ATC Group which was sold in June 2013.

He graduated from the University of Liverpool with a law degree.

Martin Block, Board Member

Martin leads the Portfolio Management team.

Martin joined HgCapital in 2001 having spent six years in leveraged finance at Royal Bank of Scotland. He focused on large cross-border transactions and was involved in the provision of both senior debt and mezzanine finance. Martin started his career at HSBC working in its leveraged finance team before joining County Natwest Merchant Bank.

From 2001 to 2008, Martin spent the majority of his time working in HgCapital’s Munich office, where he helped to build and lead our investment business there. Martin is on HgCapital’s Executive, Portfolio Review and Investment Committees and he is a director on the boards of Parts Alliance, Frösunda, Teufel, Schleich, Epyx and ATC.

Martin holds a BA Joint Hons in Economics and Philosophy from University College London.

Thorsten Toepfer, Board Member

Thorsten is a member of the Services team.

Thorsten joined HgCapital in 2011 from Hellman & Friedman, where he worked on European investments. Prior to this he worked for Morgan Stanley and McKinsey. He is part of the JLA board team, a member of the Nair & Co. board and was involved in the sale of SHL.

Thorsten holds a Master of Commerce from the Vienna University of Economics and Business Administration, a CEMS Master in International Management and graduated with high distinction as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School. A native German speaker, Thorsten is also fluent in English and conversant in French.

Chris Stone, Board Member

Chris Stone is a technology and services industry veteran, with a strong track record of building successful, global businesses.

In 1992 he joined EDS as the UK Marketing Director, and stayed there through several roles until joining Digital Equipment Company in 1996 as the UK General Manager for Services. Following the acquisition of DEC by Compaq in 1998, he joined Accenture as an Associate Partner in the BPO practice, focussing on the Financial Services industry. In October 1999, He became CEO of Northgate, an £80M revenue Software and Services business.

Over the next 12 years, Northgate grew through a combination of organic and inorganic growth to become the global No.2 specialist HR software and services business, and the UK No.1 Public Sector software business, with revenues of £850M and around 11,000 employees. Today, Northgate manages the payroll for nearly 14 million people around the world, and manages the Council taxes and Benefits administration of over 50% of Local Authorities in the United Kingdom, as well as managing technology for every Police force in the country.

Chris currently sits on the Board of CSR plc, a leading designer and manufacturer of wireless, Bluetooth and high performance entertainment technologies, where he is also chairman of the Remuneration Committee. He also acts as an advisor to various Private Equity firms, and in 2012 he was Chief Executive of Fitness First, the world’s largest gym operator, whilst it went through a financial restructuring and change of ownership.

Chris is married with three children, and lives in West Sussex. Outside of work and family, his major passion is breeding and competing event horses.

John Sullivan, Board Member

John is a skilled finance professional with extensive commercial experience across multiple sectors within the U.K. and abroad and a track record of delivering significant value to corporate operations. With more than 10 years of board-level experience, John has handled some of U.K.’s most dynamic, fast growth service businesses.

He most recently worked within Financial Services as Group Finance Director, focusing on increasing shareholder value and delivery of sustainable growth from a strategic perspective.

John spent his early career within the marketing sector following completion of his training in London. He holds a BA (Hons) in Business and is a Chartered Accountant (ACA). His notable achievements include leading a strategy of diversification with significant M&A content across several continents, coordinating a billion dollar pan-European restructuring exercise, adoption and roll-out of cross border treasury management, and designing and implementing a series of control regimes to secure regulatory approval.

Whenever possible John loves to visit Sydney, his favorite vacation spot, and he spends time in the English countryside with his family and an ever-growing pack of dogs. John’s list of things to do includes trawling art galleries, and unearthing the “next big trend”.

Jody Fullman, Company Secretary

Jody leads Nair & Co.’s group Information Technology, Business Transformation, Corporate Administration & Internal Legal divisions. Jody joined Nair & Co. in 2001 when his first task was to modernize, design and reconstruct the company’s international IT infrastructure from the 'ground up'.

Since 2002, he successfully designed, sourced and built the technology platforms for Nair & Co.’s US, India, China Japan and Singapore offices. Jody continues to spearhead innovation and strategy at Nair & Co. always utilizing best of breed technology systems to improve the efficiency of our internal and external processes. Recent achievements have been the successful implementation of a new financial accounting platform for client support and an associated web portal we call MyAccounts. He is also led the development and release of MyNair, our client facing extranet, as well as the release of MyHR, all of which are Nair & Co.’s SaaS offerings to its clients to enable effective and efficient management of the activity we perform on their behalf.

Jody graduated from the University of Wales, Swansea with an honours degree in Mechanical Engineering. Prior to joining Nair & Co., he worked at Northgate Information Solutions, (formerly known as McDonald Douglas Information Systems) where he was a technical specialist for many of the company’s key central London-based clients. Jody’s spare time is dedicated to his wife and two children and whenever possible, skiing in the beautiful French Alps. Jody also enjoys music, cinema, and participating in marathons.

Chris Stone, Chief Executive Officer

Venkatesh Eswaran, Senior VP Business Development

Venkat leads the Business Development and the Marketing functions at Nair & Co. Venkat joined the company in 2003 and worked in operations and client services before moving on to a management role. He has played a significant role in expanding Nair & Co’s India operations from modest beginnings.

Venkat is a qualified Chartered Accountant and tax expert and has more than 26 years of experience in multi-country management accounting, audits and has assisted transnational organizations and leading Indian enterprises across sectors on regulatory, tax, financial and business advisory related matters. Venkat is an expert on India inward investment and acts for a variety of private equity and VC firms, in addition to multinational companies of varying size. Prior to joining Nair & Co, he was a partner in an established firm of Chartered Accountants.

He is frequently featured as a panelist on webinars, his view shared via media interviews and social media are widely appreciated.

Venkat loves cars and taking long drives in them. A nature lover, he likes to spend whatever spare time he can manage outdoors and on the weekends can be found trekking in the mountains or enjoying the sun at the beach.

Deborah Sullivan, VP Client Services

Debbie leads Nair & Co.’s client services team and ensures best in class service delivery and experience for clients. Debbie joined Nair & Co. in 1999 and has held various roles within the company including leadership positions in accounting services where she managed day-to-day support for clients and covered service situations ranging from simple single country start ups to managing operations with more than 100 employees in multiple countries across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific and the Americas.

Debbie has extensive knowledge and expertise in helping companies expand internationally and is an authority in “untangling” complex situations where multi-country management is incorrectly handled leading to compliance and other penalties.

Debbie graduated with a BSc(Hons) in Accounting Practice from the University of Wales, Newport and is also a qualified accountant (FCCA). She enjoys foreign travel and her favorite destination is Cyprus.

Stuart Buglass, VP Product Development

Stuart manages and develops our product offering. Joining Nair & Co. in 2001 he has previously held the positions of Client Services Director and Director of Human Capital Consulting and has a well deserved reputation for his technical abilities and a strong customer service ethic.

Stuart started his career as a fast track graduate trainee with Lloyds-TSB bank, undertaking assignments in legal, marketing, and finance. He later went on to specialize in HR at Lloyds-TSB, attaining his CIPD qualification and operating in a number of leadership roles prior joining Nair & Co.

Stuart attained his LLB at Leicester University followed by the LPC at the College of Law, York.

Outside of work Stuart has a busy home life with three young children and enjoys running, cycling, tennis and painting.

Alan Mathers, VP of Operations

Alan joined Nair & Co. as VP of Operations in charge of Service Delivery to our clients in January 2014. He is qualified as a Treasury Accountant and as a Management Accountant.  He has over 20 years experience in the offshore delivery of Finance & Accounting and other Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) functions.  Alan has set up and delivered offshore BPO delivery in India, China, the Philippines, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania and the United States for blue chip clients such as BP, Diageo, NCR and Unilever.

Alan has managed all aspects of the BPO life cycle including Solution Planning, Transition and Transformation, Service Delivery, Contract Renewal and Contract termination.  He has also successfully managed senior client relationships and worked directly with the “C suite” of FTSE 100 companies.

Alan is passionate about people.  He has been responsible for teams of 1,700 and has regularly generated double digit percentage improvement in employee engagement within his teams.  Alan has won numerous awards for Leadership including the most inspirational Senior Executive of Accenture BPO in the UK during 2012.

Alan served as a Quality Assurance Director for 6 years.  He was one of the pioneers to implement six sigma processes into the Services Sector that underpinned predictable levels of service delivery from offshore centres on behalf of onshore clients.

Outside of work Alan is still a keen amateur golfer having won 2 national titles and one European title whilst representing Scotland.  Alan has completed over 70 triathlons and loves playing various sports with his son.

Client Services

Simon Clayton, Client Services Director

Simon Clayton joined Nair & Co in April 2010 as a Client Services Director. He is an economics graduate and qualified accountant. Having trained with Lloyds Bank, Simon was subsequently Finance Director of a number of technology start ups and has been heavily involved with the raising of Venture Capital funding for a number of businesses. For the previous 8 years he was a founding partner in a Data Centre design, build and operate business.

When not with his young family, Simon can usually be found under the bonnet of a classic car.

Tracey Ockwell, Client Services Director

Tracey joined Nair & Co. in July 2010 as A Client Services Director having spent several years working as a Finance Director for companies in the SME Sector. She has experience in turning round and providing financial stability for companies and restructuring contracts and skilled in raising finance for growth and capital investment.

She has helped companies expand internationally and managed both purchasing businesses as well as arranging successful sales of businesses.

Tracey is a qualified Fellow of The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and also has a MBA from Bath University.

She enjoys skiing and outside activities with her family.

Gino Zabeo, Client Services Director

Gino is a one of Nair’s Client Service Directors with an expanding portfolio of clients comprising companies at the forefront of medical and high tech innovation, a non-profit organisation promoting best practice in building energy efficiency and global private investment firms.

Gino graduated in Economics at the University of Verona in Italy and completed an EU Erasmus programme at the University of Leicester in the UK. Gino qualified with PwC as a Chartered Accountant in the UK and as a Commercialista e Revisore Contabile in Italy, working on many international M&A, due diligence and audit assignments both in the UK and in Italy. Gino developed a taste for the fine art of Italian Espresso as CFO of a group company of a worldwide coffee brand and for Venetian art in his role as Finance Director of a leading company, specializing in the restoration and renovation of historic buildings in Venice. Before relocating back to the UK, Gino worked as a management consultant developing and leading bespoke business intelligence and accounting system implementation projects for a wide range of Italian and international companies.

Now back in the UK Gino enjoys spending his free time with his wife and 3 boys walking in the surrounding hills and vales, following his children’s sporting activities, cycling, cooking and entertaining for family and friends.

Alvin Chan, Client Services Director

Alvin successfully led the development and formation of Nair & Co.’s China operations and is currently managing a diverse portfolio of clients. Since joining Nair & Co. in 2004, he has improved Nair & Co.’s innovative service portfolio and strategies, and established himself as an expert in overseas expansion.

Alvin has over 20 year of experience in the accounting profession and the commercial field, and was involved in IPO, due diligence, internal and external audit work in Asia. His experience spans the Asia Pacific region including Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand and he has been instrumental in helping many companies set up their operations in the region.

Alvin qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in the U.K. and also holds an MBA from Cardiff Business School. His favorite leisure pursuits are burning calories with racket games but he often finds these substituted by the more competitive arena of Nintendo Wii at home.

Shivram Rajagopalan, Client Services Director

As a client services Director, Shivram’s key role is to oversee client deliverables and ensure quality of service by advising them on their expansion plans and monitoring compliance of local laws in the various countries the client operates in. His high standard of client service has not only kept many a customer happy, but has also earned more business for the organization.

Having previously worked in major NASDAQ/NYSE listed companies such as Tata Communications and Sify, Shivram calls upon his depth of experience to understand and implement better financial reporting, compliance and corporate governance procedures.

Shivram is a qualified Chartered Accountant from The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and has also earned a CISA certification from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), USA.

Leadership according to Shivram is not about the title, but being able to live through the leadership characteristics in all walks of life – be it work or ones’ personal life.

Shivram likes to spend his leisure hours reading fiction, listen to music and sometimes into social networking. He is passionate about Formula 1 and has officiated races at the National Racing Championships in India. Go-karting is also one of his favorite activities. He is a travel enthusiast and likes to explore new places.

Martin Potter, Client Services Director

Martin joined Nair & Co. in January 2014 as a Client Service Director in the Bristol, UK headquarters, after over 13 years of being engaged and on assignments in both Western and more recently in Eastern Europe.

Martin has held a variety of finance roles over the past 20 years, including leadership roles at Perkins Engines, Caterpillar, Flextronics and TE Connectivity. His experience includes supporting start-up entities and early stage business development in mature markets as well as developing economies such as Ukraine. Disciplines include finance and tax, IT, HR, and commercial management.  With an extensive M&A background, Martin is able to leverage operational experience in his advice and support for Nair & Co.’s clients.  

Martin is qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse in the UK, graduated from Nottingham University with a BA in Industrial Economics and currently resides in Bristol.  Having travelled extensively in Europe, Martin intends to devote more time to his other passion, British railway history.

Alison Jones, Client Services Director

Alison Jones is a Client Service Director who joined Nair & Co. in January 2014. She is an accounting professional with over 30 years of experience in Finance.

For the last 17 years she has worked for Halcrow (CH2mHill), a global Engineering Consultancy business. Alison’s most recent position at Halcrow was as Finance Director for the Natural Resources Business group supporting 1200 staff operating out a diverse number of countries.  As a result she has gained a wealth of experience in International Finance at both an operational and strategic level.

As a commercial accountant she has supported the business through integrations, acquisitions, growth and reorganisations.  She also has experience in delivering change which includes developing and streamlining new processes.

In her spare time Alison enjoys outdoor activities and is a keen walker and camper. 

Heads of Department

Suzanne Caruso, Affiliate Network Manager

Suzanne heads up Nair & Co’s Affiliate department from the company’s US office location in Florida. She joined Nair & Co in 2012 and oversees the relations and overall project management of the Company’s Global Affiliate Network.

Suzanne has an entrepreneurial background and extensive experience in Project Management, Cost Estimating, Cost Management, Contract Negotiations and Team Building. She has 20 years experience in directing or supervising multiple high volume projects with a written track record of delivering on or before deadline. Prior to joining Nair & Co, Suzanne owned and operated her own fast paced construction business which she built from the ground floor to multimillion dollar contracts both in public and private sectors.

Suzanne is passionate about her love and welfare of animals, particularly her beautiful dogs; protection of the environment, riding the back roads of the entire USA on her Harley Davidson and spending time at the beach.

Anup Pendse, Head of R&D

As the head of Nair & Co.’s R& D department, Anup leads a team which oversees the preparation and up-to-date management of the company’s research templates across all service areas and the technical updates for clients. His role is key in ensuring that Nair & Co. fee earners are kept fully current so that clients receive accurate and up-to-date advice relating to their needs. Anup leads an important role within Nair & Co. given our commitment to a high level of technical competence and expertise,

Anup has over 10 years of experience in research, taxation, foreign exchange regulations and audits. Prior to joining Nair & Co., he worked with the tax and consulting group RSM Astute (part of RSM international). Anup also has extensive experience in providing audit, tax and foreign exchange laws related advisory services to some of the largest corporate groups in India. He began his career at A.F. Ferguson (now part of Deloitte India).

A commerce graduate and certified Chartered Accountant, Anup has produced a magazine for Chartered Accountancy professionals and also served as a lecturer with various business schools in India. In his spare time, Anup likes to jog and read literature on global finance and economics.

Ping Chen, Head of China Operations

Ping Chen leads Nair & Co.’s China operations from the company’s local headquarters in Beijing. Ping first joined Nair & Co. in its HR consultancy division and has since moved up the ranks to provide full service support to clients in establishing business operations in China.

Prior to joining Nair & Co., Ping worked in the foreign affairs services department of a large state-owned holding company, where she advised many domestic and international clients of different industries in general corporate matters, commercial transactions, HR staffing design as well as benefits consultancy.

Ping earned a master degree in University of International Business and Economics in Beijing. She loves Chinese paintings, reading and swimming.

Akihiko Higa, Head of Japan Operations

Akihiko leads Nair & Co.’s Japan operations from the company’s local headquarters in Tokyo. Akihiko oversees service delivery and management for the clients in Japan and is an expert in helping international companies navigate the country’s complex legal and regulatory framework.

Akihiko has over 30 years of experience in finance, accounting, human resources and managing back office operations for Japanese and foreign capital companies. Prior to joining Nair & Co., he worked as an accounting, HR and general affairs manager with a European capital and international medical device company. Akihiko graduated from Hosei University in Tokyo with a BA Business Administration.

In his spare time Akihiko enjoys movies and has an interest in learning about various genres of music, including opera, pop and rock.

Lee Sheehan, Head of Tax

Lee leads the provision of tax services for Nair & Co., having joined the business in December 2013. With over 20 years working in the tax compliance and advisory area, Lee has considerable experience in helping businesses to manage their tax affairs both effectively and efficiently.

Lee began his career in tax with the UK Tax Authorities, from there he completed his professional training with a Top 10 accounting firm in London. Over the course of his career Lee has also worked with top tier firms Andersen, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Ernst & Young, predominantly in the UK although he has spent three years working as a tax advisor in Switzerland and New Zealand.

Although having trained in corporate income tax, Lee has spent a large part of his career advising on broader tax issues for multinational businesses, including indirect taxes such as VAT and Customs Duty. In the last ten years Lee has worked almost exclusively with clients operating on a multi jurisdictional basis and has most recently built up considerable experience in issues relating to transfer pricing, business models and structures, financing and tax efficient profit repatriation. In the last three years, working in an in-house environment, Lee has advised a business unit of a well known UK FTSE100 company on managing its global tax exposures, including specific issues in that company’s growth markets in Brazil, Russia, India and China. As well as these growth markets, Lee was also responsible specifically for the provision of tax services to European entities and has recent specific experience of Tax Authority audits and reviews in Norway, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Outside of work Lee enjoys running, being a frequent entrant into 10k races in and around the Bristol area, badminton and table tennis! Married with two children, Lee also likes to spend with his family, going to the cinema and supporting his two children in their education and their extra-curricular pursuits of football, archery and basketball.

Julie Gilbert, Head of Compliance

Julie leads the Nair & Co. compliance team. She is a highly experienced financial controller with a strong background in integrating finance teams and processes.

Prior to joining Nair & Co., Julie served as the Group Financial Controller for ACS Information Technologies UK Ltd., formerly known as Anix Group. During her time with ACS, Julie was instrumental in helping the company to grow through numerous acquisitions. She also had a variety of responsibilities including acting as the company’s payroll administrator and as company secretary.

Before joining Anix Group, Julie worked as a financial accountant for Chesterton International Surveyors, Rolls Royce, and NatWest Bank.

Julie, who enjoys travel, reading, exercising and has two children, ages 19 and 21.

Nick Corney, Head of Human Capital Consulting

Nick leads the human capital consulting team. He joined Nair & Co. in 2013 having practiced as a qualified solicitor for the previous 23 years. Prior to joining Nair &Co, Nick worked for four years as the Principal of Prime Law from 2009 to 2013, where he focused on employment law, commercial contract and general commercial law, and commercial disputes and their resolution.

Previously, Nick worked as a director at William Graham Law Ltd., and as a company solicitor in industry at Mouchel (GBS) and HBS Business Services Group Ltd. Before that, he was also a solicitor for Leo Abse & Cohen, Dolmans Solicitors, Huttons Solicitors, and Eversheds.

Nick earned his law degree from the University of Wales-Cardiff and his Law Society finals from the University of Bristol. He played rugby for 30 years before becoming a Welsh Rugby Union accredited Rugby Coach and Referee. Nick is married with two children who are both in University.
